Bird Seed Containers - Bird Supplies

I make homemade bird seed cakes and need plastic containers?

I would like to contact a company that sells plastic containers that will hold one, two and three pounds of bird seed that I make into suit cakes. It is a pastime for me as I love watching the birds. Now a lot of my friends have been asking me to make them for thier use and I told them I will if I can find a company to buy the containers from. Can someone help me?

Hellebores on the horizon as we inch our way toward spring

After the hectic holidays, a quiet January for me means envying other people’s birdfeeders, and watching the hellebores in my garden to see if they really do bloom in winter.

To start with the hellebores, until recently you could only read about them in books about English gardens where the climate is milder than ours. Hellebores, or Lenten roses (Helleborus orientalis), keep English gardeners in good spirits during the dark months, and give them a good reason for checking on the garden, no matter how gray the day.

When hellebores started to appear in our local nurseries, I started experimenting with them in the Catskills garden. We have been remarkably successful. I say “remarkably” because what I thought of as a finicky exotic has settled in as comfortably as any native — even more so.

The Porch Garden, which started out with only native plants, has been tweaked a bit over time.

How to make bird cake

Sarah the warden at The Waters' Edge gave me this recipe for bird cake, which I thought you might find useful if you want to help the birds in your garden out while it's still pretty cold. The snow might be melting here in Barton, but I think the birds would still appreciate a little extra help, and it's fun to make this cake too, so why not do something good today. If you don't get birds in your back garden, or if you don't have a garden atall, you can always give the cake mixture to the wild birds in the Waters' Edge park. There are lots of different ingredients you can put into making bird cake, but bird cake must always have suet or lard in it to make it set. If you are using suet, meat suet is better than vegetable suet. Ok, so first problem there folks, the shop didn't have any lard, so I used 'I can't believe it's not butter'. Sarah says that's ok, but it won't set. But I figured the birds probably wouldn't complain too much.
