Hellebores on the horizon as we inch our way toward spring
07.01.10
After the hectic holidays, a quiet January for me means envying other people’s birdfeeders, and watching the hellebores in my garden to see if they really do bloom in winter.
To start with the hellebores, until recently you could only read about them in books about English gardens where the climate is milder than ours. Hellebores, or Lenten roses (Helleborus orientalis), keep English gardeners in good spirits during the dark months, and give them a good reason for checking on the garden, no matter how gray the day.
When hellebores started to appear in our local nurseries, I started experimenting with them in the Catskills garden. We have been remarkably successful. I say “remarkably” because what I thought of as a finicky exotic has settled in as comfortably as any native — even more so.
The Porch Garden, which started out with only native plants, has been tweaked a bit over time.
