Killingly mill building must add safety signs or close — today

A 100-year-old mill that houses several businesses must add additional fire exit signs to remain open, officials said.

Building and fire officials this week ordered Mark Yellin, owner of the Rison Mill at 43 Connecticut Mills Ave., to install seven fire exit signs by noon today, or risk being shut down.

“There were signs missing at three or four locations,” Fire Marshal Ray Allen said. “They had called in an electrician Friday and we expect the problem to be solved shortly.”

Yellin could not be reached Friday for comment.

The 170,000-square-foot red-brick mill houses several businesses, including the Zone Laser Tag Family Fun Center, Droll Yankees and Delta Rubber. It also is the site of a weekly flea market.

Scott Colwell of Droll Yankees said no one had notified him of the code violations. The firm, which manufactures custom bird feeders, is not part of the main mill structure, though its storage section extends into the larger building.

Droll Yankee Platinum Finish Peanut Bird Feeder : This peanut feeder is 13 inches tall, has a powder coated platinum finish that won’t chip or fade, zinc die cast tops, bases, and ports that will last a lifetime, stainless steel wire that squirrels can’t chew, a snug fitting sliding cap that’s easy for you to lift but hard for squirrels, a top assembly that’s easily removed for cleaning, and a contoured base that keeps seed within reach and is threaded so you can attach an A-6T or OMT seed tray to catch seed and provide extra room for birds! The stainless steel mesh is the correct size for shelled peanuts, peanut mixes or black oil sunflower seed. The feeder attracts woodpeckers and the aluminum perches can’t be chewed and don’t hurt birds’ feet.
