Madsen said she first started working with parrots six years ago.
"My mother bought a parrot named Ollie that only liked me," she said. "My dad would make him toast and jam, but the bird would still peck at him. My mother bought another parrot, and I got Ollie. I started a bird rescue out of my house and later purchased a place in Creston as a stand-alone rescue. It is a nonprofit organization that is supported by volunteers and donations."
Madsen said she rescued Beaker, her blue macaw, when he was 10 months old.
"Someone paid $1,500 for him and trimmed his feathers incorrectly so that he couldn't balance," she said. "He kept falling off the perch and breaking his feathers. Three years later, Beaker still crash lands and breaks feathers."
Coral, Madsen's cockatoo, was a "feather-picker" because the bird had allergies to carrots and other foods. Madsen puts a dress on Coral to keep the bird from pulling out feathers and causing infection.
"Cockatoos are the number one bird in rescue," Madsen said. "They can be loud. Coral wants to be held all the time."
