Woman rescued from second floor of burning home
Duluth firefighters used a neighbor’s rickety ladder and then later one of their own to rescue a one-legged woman from the second floor window of a burning Lincoln Park/West End home Saturday night.
The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at 611 N. 22nd Ave. W., with initial calls saying a woman was trapped on the second floor.
Police officers and firefighters first used a neighbor’s old wooden ladder to try to reach the woman, who was hanging out the front upstairs window of the two-story house.
“When they got there, there was fire coming out of the first floor and thick smoke from the second floor, and she looked about ready to jump,’’ Jim Ray, assistant chief, said. “They got up the first ladder and managed to get her out of the window so the super-heated smoke wasn’t burning her back anymore. … Then as we got more personnel on the scene, they used one of our ladders to bring her down.’’
The woman was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to a Duluth hospital. She was treated for smoke inhalation and possible burns to her back, Ray said. Ray said her condition and location weren’t known Sunday evening.

I was feeling kinda hacked off new year eve. Not one single invite to a year end party, not one. I told myself to hell with it, I would go out and find my own party, go to a bar and just join in with everyone.
It didn't seem good to go out too early so I sat in my room drinking. Kept thinking I'd go out later, later, then I looked at my watch and saw that it was almost midnight already. As it turned midnight the was the sound of a lot of firecrackers outside which made me look at the window. What the? There was a black cat on the ledge starring in at me!
What! Cats do not sit on that ledge. It is not so very high but I never seen a cat there before. What does this mean for me? Some say black cats are good luck, some say bad luck. Why was it there looking at me right at the start of the new year? Does this mean that the new year is going to be good, it needs to be.
Maybe that black cat did not have an invite to a party either. Or more likely the poor cat was a little spooked with all the firecrackers.
Does it mean good luck or bad luck in the coming year?
Well, why not believe that it will mean good luck for you. As Alyssa says many people believe a black cat seeking you out will mean wealth for you in the new year.
May 2010 be a good one for you.
