Moving my outdoor cat, to a neighborhood with other cats? How to stop it from scratching my furniture?
Sep 17, 2008 by Skaterdude277 | Posted in Cats
Were moving into a new house; 3 problems.
1. Cat will scratch all of our new leather furniture
2. Hes an outdoor cat, i dont want him to wonder off
3. The neighborhood already has a few cats, i've seen them get into some brawls...
I love my kitty and do not want to have to give it away...
Help would be extremely appreciated.
I don't know if I really have anything to say that you haven't already thought of yourself, but....
Make sure there is always something around that the cat CAN scratch. You can also spray certain things on your couch, but you have to be sure to spray it every day, otherwise the cat might decide to scratch again when the scent is gone. For some cats, this is enough to train them to not scratch the couch. Others are stubborn and just wait for the spray to wear off. Another method is putting double sided tape on the couch. Again, for some this is enough to train the cat to not scratch while others will scratch where there is no tape, or scratch once the tape is removed. My husband and I used tape on the couch and provided a scratching post. This effectively got our cat to scratch the couch only once in a while. It's no huge success, but it helped and some cats are less stubborn. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you. It sounds as if you need your success rate to be a bit higher than ours. Another thing you can try is squirting the cat with water when they scratch. We only yell at our cat when he scratches, but I imagine water would send a stronger message to the cat.

Cat Furniture Is A Great Way To Provide Entertainment | Cats
by Carol Navagato
Do you have a cat that is full of energy and bounds around the house, climbing the curtains, the window screens, and getting into everything? If this sounds like your cat, you definitely need to provide your cat with his own cat furniture. You can get some furniture for cats that are made specifically for a cat’s instincts and nature in climbing and scratching.
What exactly is cat furniture and why does a cat need furniture anyway? There are a lot of people probably wondering this, especially if they are not cat owners. If you do own a cat, then you know very well that giving your cat his own place to climb and scratch is the best way to keep him happy and off the people furniture.
One interesting piece of cat furniture is called a cat tree. This is meant a lot for climbing and scratching. These trees come in an assortment of designs and colors with many different kinds of toys and places for a cat to perch and rest. A cat tree is meant to give your cat hours of feline enjoyment.
One other kind of furniture for cats is a cat condo. These are constructed in a way that your cat will have a lot of cubby holes and hiding places to get into. A cat condo also comes in many kinds of designs and colors. If you would like, you could always design your own condo and have someone build it for you.
One vital piece of cat furniture is a window perch. You will always need to make sure that your cat has a view of the outdoors. This is actually an indoor cat’s favorite thing to do and provides a lot of enjoyment for a cat who doesn’t get outdoors very much. Watching the wildlife out of the window is a great way for indoor cats to pass the time.
If your cat stays indoors all the time, you might think about getting a large cage with a kitty tree and perches built inside it for some outdoor time and fresh air. This way your cat would be protected from the neighbor’s dog and he won’t go missing. Keeping a cat indoors all the time without a little outdoor exposure is extremely unhealthy.
