Heartgard Plus Dogs - Dog Supplies

Are there any side effects to the new chewable Heartgard plus for dogs?

This is a chewable for heart worms that can kill dogs. We recently started our 2 dogs on them and the one is acting funny. We are wondering if it might be from these new chewables. She seems to be in a state of depression. Thank you. Sue

If your dog has collie type breed or australian shepherd, border collie, etc. They have been shown to have difficulty with this medication. If she continues to look poorly, you should seek veterinary care.

Let's just PAWS

Pet lovers and their pets flocked to “Pose for PAWS” at Bonifacio High Street held over the holiday break. “Pose for PAWS” has become a regular event for the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) as a way of raising funds for the PAWS animal shelter.

Really, what better way is there to get pet lovers all giggly and gaga than having a photo session with their loving pets? High-tech pet lovers in the group can post their photos on Facebook or whatever site they are on, faster than fast.

Through the years of attending the event I have noticed how the number of people who come and participate has grown. Blame it on the need to have a better photo of humans with their pet companions for this year’s holiday cards.

This year, over 150 humans and pets lined up at the photo booths to have their holiday portraits taken. PAWS volunteers were on hand to assist the guardians with doggie treats and squeaky toys to make sure that the pets

What is the Difference Between Heartgard and Heartgard Plus?

) Plus does not know how to spell the word “guard”, both products are highly effective at preventing heartworm disease.

The products contain the same anti-heartworm medication at the same doses. The plus product also contains a medication to prevent and eliminate certain intestinal worms . Because some intestinal worms can spread from pets to people, many public health experts recommend using the plus product for both canine and human safety.

Both products have good safety profiles, although Collie breeds may be especially sensitive to side effects from heartworm preventatives. Owners of Collies or Collie mixes always should talk to their veterinarian before starting heartworm medications. In my experience side effects are extremely rare, even in Collies.

The success of Heartgard and Heartgard plus has inspired a pair of copycat products with identical ingredients but different misspellings: Iverhart ( .

Several other heartworm preventatives are available for cats and dogs. Interceptor and Advantage Multi are two of the most commonly used. Both of these medications eliminate some types of intestinal worms.

In my experience all of the medications mentioned in this article generally are safe and effective. Sam, although your dog’s new medication will not have added heartworm efficacy, the broadened spectrum of the product has the potential to benefit him and you.

Just FYI—the spelling of Heartgard, Iverhart, etc. (as well as all other brand names, in fact) is entirely intentional, in order to copyright/trademark the name (which cannot be done with the “normal” spelling of words.) There is no need for “sic” designations, as the spelling of the product is correct. They are not misspelled. ;-)
