Lower Twp. women fill need, stomachs with pet-food bank
LOWER TOWNSHIP - Melissa Atkinson and Rhonda Griffin stack cans of cat food and bags of dog food on a shelf outside their Cape May County pet-grooming business.
The Milk Bones and Meow Mix are free for the taking - a pet-food bank for animal owners having difficulty affording food for their pets.
"If we can keep one dog out of a shelter, it was worth it," Atkinson said.

of Carriage House Grooming on Seashore Road, started the pet-food bank in January, when Atkinson read an article in a Florida newspaper about a woman distributing pet food from her car.
As word spread about their pet-food bank, more recipients started showing up at their door, they said.
A man rode his bicycle up to the bank and filled the basket on the handlebars with pet food. A woman with three large dogs worried she would have to give two of them to a neighbor.
"We've had people here say, 'We can't afford to feed our dogs anymore,'" Atkinson said. "People are really hurting."
