Pet Gates For Large Dogs - Dog Supplies

Large dogs with baby gates (weimaraner energy)?

I pet sit and am a dog walker for 2 weimaraners(1 year old and 2.5 year old). Their parents are away from home from about 10am-10pm for 2 months during legislative session. I walk or run with the dogs for at least 30 minutes(normally more like an hour) 2x/day when their owners have long hours.

If you know weimaraners, you know they are smart. The one year old can lock the deadbolts and open push down handle doors. She also has some separation anxiety. The 2.5 year old isn't as much of an issue-- better behaved, clearly.

Our problem is they still seem to be bursting with energy if the owners get home much later, and they sometimes are pulling me like work horses on our walks/runs. We were going to try to let them roam free in the house instead of crates, but are afraid of damage and being locked out...

Does anyone have any experience with large dogs and baby gates? Do they normally obey the barrier or try to jump it? Any weimaraner experience?

we have two golden retrievers. we have a pet gate that works nicely, they can't jump over it. i know they make extra-tall pet gates for larger/higher-energy dogs. try a pet gate, rather than a baby gate, because they have more varieties designed for animals, rather than a tiny baby...

Even a fur coat doesn't quite cut it in this cold snap

"The racks used to be full," said Dani Healy, assistant manager of Pet Supermarket in Nokomis. "We sold at least 100 dog coats and now we're out of the bigger ones."

At Tractor Supply in Bradenton, horse blankets have been selling out as quickly as the inventory is replenished.

"It's so cold, horses can get stressed and colicky," said Edye Shipps, who lives on a small farm in rural Venice and stocked up on blankets early.

"The rest of the week, they'll be blanketed," she said of her long-haired horses.

Whether bed-sleeping dogs need coats for short trots outside is debatable, but some owners were taking no chances.

"She just shakes if I don't keep her" in a coat, said Nancy McBride, bundled for arctic temperatures as her poodle Princess pranced around Venice's Woodmere Dog Park in a pink parka.

McBride's two other dogs had to endure the cold since she could only find one large dog coat at area pet supply stores.

But a Sarasota veterinarian said they are not in danger.

Pet Gates – Being Safe - Dog Crates & Dog Cages Blog

Pet gates, whether they are made of metal, plastic or wood, keep your dog out of trouble by restricting its access to certain areas or confining it to one with suitable surroundings. They are versatile and can be placed in basically any location: At doorways, before access to stairs, etc. They also can be a better alternative to closing a door. With a pet gate, your dog can still see and hear you, which may help keep it calmer and make misbehavior less likely. Many pet gates are also portable, allowing you to easily move the gate to fit your needs.

Most pet gates are adjustable or compatible with expansion panels, allowing them to fit areas with wide openings. They are also relatively easy to install. Some gates feature pressure mounts, which require you only to fit the gate tightly inside a door frame or room entrance, while others feature wall mounts, which require the addition of installed hardware. Gates also come in a variety of sizes to ensure that large or tall dogs will not be able to readily escape. When choosing a gate, be sure to select one that withstands your dog’s size and behavior. Make sure that the gate cannot be tipped over or opened when your dog leans on it, cannot be chewed on and does not have widely-spaced slats in which your dog could get stuck.

Plastic mesh pet gates are not designed to withstand dogs that may display aggressive chewing. Wire mesh pet gates, while more durable, may still be compromised if chewed on; plus, they also can hurt your dog’s mouth and teeth. For an aggressive chewer, consider installing a pet gate with strong metal slats, rather than mesh.
