Black cats and puppies hoping for some good luck

Of the scores of cats taken in at Nate's Place in the Cooper Creek Shopping Center, black cats make up a sizeable percentage of the ones who are left behind.
"We're out of room," said Wendy Scott, a volunteer working on fundraising for the nonprofit animal sanctuary and adoption center.
Scott said the a no-kill shelter needs donations as it sees more discarded animals, from people who have fallen on hard times or simply cannot care for their pet anymore.
"When you're no-kill, you have huge vet bills," she said, noting that all of the animals that leave Nate's Place have been spayed or neutered and microchipped.
Sick animals that come in are treated and allowed to recover apart from the other animals.
Developer Nate Benderson, for whom Nate's Place is named, has been donating mall space to the animal rescue for the past year.
The sanctuary scrambles to keep up with the number of pets being brought in and is in constant need of food, cleaning supplies, financial contributions and volunteers to walk dogs, clean litter boxes and help find homes for homeless cats and dogs.
