Garrett Meyers has never seen the ocean.
So, he decided to bring the ocean to his home in Bemidji, the city furthest from it.
Inside his home sit a 125-gallon, a 10-gallon and a 30-gallon saltwater aquarium. These small-scale oceans keep Meyers’ interest consumed in keeping his sea life sustainable within the glass walls.
Meyers’ fascination with marine aquariums started with a visit to a pet shop in Grand Forks, N.D., 10 years ago. Meyers took one look at a 75-gallon saltwater aquarium and just had to try it out.
Today, Meyers is the founder of the Northern Minnesota Reef Club, a club for saltwater enthusiasts from all over northern Minnesota. Since he started his club three years ago, he and his fellow club members have connected with saltwater aquarium hobbyists from all over the Midwest.
Meyers has even started an online forum called “Frozen Ocean,” named as a quip for the hobbyists who choose to have tropical saltwater aquariums in Northern Minnesota.
Hubby and I had been tossing the idea around of upgrading our 10 gallon aquarium. We had to move it from the Baby's room and since then it was kind of residing in the middle of the hallway just outside the kitchen. Not a permanent residence at all. But we got to thinking, that since we had to move the heavy beast again, why not just set up a nicer, bigger one. So we stated shopping around, and trying to find the best values and use what we had when possible. Turns out we had a beautiful powder coated metal stand from his brother in the backyard (scrap pile, but in great condition because it was powder coated). And it also turned out that a buddy of ours had a 37 gallon tank with hood, light and filter sitting in his basement. So the idea was born to set up a bigger tank. The metal stand didn't pan out, as I mentioned somewhere before because I was afraid Megan could pull on the legs and topple the big aquarium. So we used some Christmas money from my dad to buy a nice black wood cabinet. It looks great, and I absolutley love it. If our old fish do well in it, we'll buy some new ones soon. Last night was fun, carefully transitioning the old fish to the new tank. The hardest was the big Pleco who is pushing 8-10" and didn't fit in the net. Frogger was the second hardest as that little bugger almost took off for the front door. Luckily he stunned himself from the jump from net, to table to floor and I was able to scoop him back up. I was also excited to be able to add some cool things to the tank. Like the huge seashell that was my grandmother's. Or the granite round rocks we stole from the shoreline while in Maine. I also added vintage glass bottles, one pepsi and one 7 up for our eel fish to swim in and out of. We have live plant bulbs in there, but they need 8 days or so to sprout. Still feeling like crap. Stayed home from work to avoid infecting the rest of the office, but with this being my last scheduled week at work until long after baby girl arrives, I have tons...
