I have an elite mini aquarium filter how do i take care of it?

I have not seen this filter, is this the Hagen one ? According to a description on the internet, it uses a foam sponge insert. There is no need to replace this sponge when you do water changes. After siphoning out the dirty tank water, use the same water to rinse the sponge in order to remove the debris & gunk collected, then just put it back into the filter. Smaller filters tend to get dirtier faster & you'll probably have to do this weekly. Do remember to switch off the power supply of the filter before you do any maintenance.
Never use water straight from the tap to rinse any filter medium (sponge, wool, bio-rings etc) as the chlorine in normal tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria that does biological filtration.
Over time, if you notice the filtration seems to be weaker or you start hear funny noises from the filter, stop it & dismantle it to check if the impeller (propeller like thing) is ok, as it may be clogged by something and can't turn properly.
That's pretty much how to maintain it. I have used similar small filters before, but if you are keeping goldfish it just might be too small to cope with the amount of goldfish poop.
