Fluval Filter Parts - Fish Supplies

Is the Fluval 2 plus a filter or an air pump???

I have recently purchaced a fluval 2 plus for my large fish tank, but was wondering if it doubles as a filter and an airpump, or if you need to by an extra air pump or filter to go with it.

If you do, how would I connect the two?
And does the fluval 2 plus need to be totally submerged, or can I leave part of the blue section where water comes out slightly above water level to create O2 bubbles?

Thanx....

Fluvals are stand-alone units that don't connect to anything else. You can use them both as a filter or air pump (not to power air-run decorations, but for aeration) in smaller tanks (up to 20-25 gallons).

There's media inside that will trap debris from the water, the only problem here is that as soon as you cut the power ot lift them out of the water, the stuff drains back out into the water. I've found the best way to clean them is to take a large plastic deli container (cleaned well) and sit the Fluval into it underwater while it's still running. Then, when you cut the power, all the "gunk" that's released stays in the cup and you can lift both the cup and filter out without making your water too dirty again.

To use for aeration, put the whole unit just under the water surface so the current produced makes movement at the surface. If you're using this in a turtle, newt, frog, crab, or other tank with the water level dropped and the filter turned on its side (what I use these for), just position the nozzle so the water flows up at an angle. It's not necessary for it to produce bubbles - these pop too quickly to add oxygen to the water. Most of the oxygen that's dissolved in the water comes from the water surface, so what you want to do is circulate this water to the rest of the tank. So rather than bubbles, you want the current to make ripples on top of the water.

If you have a larger tank than a 20 gallon. it would be best to add a hang-on-tank power filter if you keep the tank filled to the top. With either the Fluval or a hang-on, an air pump isn't necessary.

Fluval G3 and G6 canister filters get priced for US Market and you ...

We know. You’ve been waiting to get your hands on the new Fluval G canister filter that has been leaked out via the Internets for the past several months. You’ve no doubt heard of the overpriced plastic parts inside the unit and want to buy the unit because it features a LCD screen smaller then your mobile phone.  However you didn’t know what the G3 and G6 Fluval canister filters cost. That’s where we come in. The first retailer that has the unit up for sale is Pet solutions. It’s obvious that Fluval is proud of their new unit because of their retail price they have slapped on G series filters. You might want to sit down first before you go any further.

One of the first online retailers to get the unit in stock to ship is Pet Solutions a company located out in Ohio. They are advertising the price of $439.99 for the G3 filter and $499 for the G6 filter. Wait what? $500 for a canister filter with a fancy LCD screen? Seriously?  Both of those prices include a $50 Gift certificate to Pet Solutions which has me thinking its saying “we’re sorry you bought this filter, have $50 on us”.

Fluval picked a wrong time to launch a overpriced $500 canister filter to the market. Even with their supposed “advanced technology” in the filter they are pricing themselves out of the market. Fluval made it known that they spent over “3 million on R&D” and you know they have to get that back somehow right?
