Betta Fish is having trouble breathing! I have no medications in the house HELP PLEASE?
I have a female Betta, have had her for about 2 months. I fed her pellets and she was perfectly fine until 2 or 3 days ago when I noticed she was staying at the bottom of the container a lot.
The first day she would move as soon as I went close to her, today not so much. I kept observing her and she goes up gulps some air and goes to the bottom. Her gills are moving a lot faster than before, or at least it seems so, So i concluded she has some trouble breathing.
The first day I noticed there was something wrong, she was still eating the pellets. I did not feed her for a day, hoping it was a digestive problem and she would clean out by herself. I tried to feed her today and she will not eat pellets or any veggetables.
So I just did a complete water change, moved her to a new container because I was afraid there is some infection on the gravel that was in her previous container, I put her in drinking water and added half teaspoon of salt. Please tell me how can I help my fish? I have no medications around the house (except human meds, anything that could work?? aspirin, tylenol, aleve, advil, vitamins) I am going crazy thinking my fish is going to die and Im doing nothing to help it :(
DO NOT USE ANY HUMAN MEDS!
dumping aspirin is the quickest way to kill a fish..
The main thing iis that your female is probably cold. In a bowl, no matter what the room temp is, it can not be warm enough nor steady enough to keep her healthy. bettas need temps around 76-80 degrees F. at al times. is you house that warm at all times? probably not. Also doing a complete water change is hard on them, as their bodies have to get use to new water all over again.
What type of salt did you use? House salt usually has iodine in it, a no-no for fish. Since bettas are carninous fish, they seldom will touch veggies, instead I use daphnia for a fishy laxative. this is insect based and my boys love it.
You need the water kept at a consistant temp and it needs to be tested since its not in a cycled tank. She seems to breathing harder because she is stressed with her conditons. Here is a site to read to help you out,
