Before watching Robin Hood Season 3 on DVD this week, my thinking was that one of the appeals of a Robin Hood TV series is the same as it might be for Zorro, Batman or even Sherlock Holmes. Having a central character who’s instantly recognizable, whose challenges, enemies, friends and philosophy are pretty well established in your head, gives you a perfect jumping-on point if you want to watch, say, season 3, episode 7 first. Try doing that with The Office or Lost , and it could be a disaster. It’s part of why characters like Superman and Batman, in spite of having long and elaborate histories in the comics, are always welcome in the movie theaters, where audiences disdain complexity. No matter how complex a story gets, if it revolves around an iconic character like these, you can walk in and feel like you “get it.”
So it was, of course, with some degree of surprise that I flicked on the television and saw Robin Hood’s first episode feel quite a bit like an old-fashioned Spider-Man story. After what you quickly realized was the murder of his wife Marion at the end of last season, Robin is out for blood, and doesn’t want his band of Merry Men “holding him back” anymore. He doesn’t want to be Robin Hood, either; he just wants to kill his wife’s killer and get on with his life.
Comic I got last week.
Red Robin #8
Tim Drake believes that Bruce Wayne is alive and has left his role as Robin to search for his adopted father. Taking on the identity of Red Robin, Tim is neither Batman or Robin instead a mixture of what made both characters successful. Not afraid to cross the line, Red Robin is working with Ra’s Al Ghul and his league of assigns to take down the Council of Spiders who is trying to assassinate the League of Assassins. Last Week In Comics:
After sizing up each assassin Tim focuses on their strengths and weaknesses along with all the lessons his former teachers taught him to save his live and that of Tam Fox:
He moves effortlessly like Dick Grayson, Fights like Shiva and Ducard, and Knows how to win the next fight and the one that follows before the fights being as Bruce taught him. Tim takes the last lesson from Bruce one step farther and immediately takes out the League of Assassins computer network around the world after taking down the Council of Spiders. By taking out the computer network, Tim also takes out all of the League’s power generators around the globe leaving the League powerless. Tim knows that the power and network outage will not slow the League down too much, but it is a win against evil… unfortunately he now has sets of assassins looking to meet him in Gotham upon his return.I like this new direction for Tim. Back when his run as Robin was winding down I thought he was acting more like a “Dark Detective” than Batman was, and I loved it. Eight issues into his new identity and Tim is again proving he is more than any other Robin or Batman, he is a culmination of both. Don’t take my word for it:

If you have not been reading Red Robin I recommend that you do. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t consider it “Must Read,” but it is a fun and a well conceived super-hero comic. This series uses the “Batman” template making it easy for new readers to jump on board and features enough continuity to make us veteran Bat-Readers smile.
