I've volunteered to be a Clive Fire Department Santa Claus for seven consecutive years, and I love the opportunity to do it once again.
Officially, I'm one of two chaplains for the Clive fire and police departments. Most of my chaplaincy work involves complex human problem-solving and that can be wearing.
Once a year, however, I ride on the rear deck of a firetruck and enjoy the privilege of bringing Santa Claus to Clive families.
My day in the sun (or the snow) would be impossible, however, without the hard work of the professional men and women of the Clive Fire Department. They maintain a 47-year tradition of Santa delivering candy canes to the children, dog yummies to family pets, and an abundance of good will to all residents.
I head for a locker room with four other wannabe Santas and we inspect the costumes hanging on the sidewalls. The suit-up begins. Some ask for form-enhancing midriff pillows; some don't need them. The place has the
