Water Frogs As Pets - Reptile Supplies

do water frogs make good pets? some info on water frogs please?

i wanna get 2 or 3 water frogs and i was wondering if they make good pets. i would have them live with a water turtle, soem snails, and guppies. would that work??
and some info on water frogs, turtles, guppies would be nice, and what they eat. thnx

I think I might have just answered your question just a second ago on another question you posted. You do not want to put them all together. The turtle needs it own home. The snails, guppies and frogs will live happily together until the frogs are big enough to eat the guppies for dinner. I have a yahoo group on african clawed frogs if you would like to join and read about their care I will post it at the end of this. They make really great pets and you can even teach them to come up to the top of the water and hand feed them. When little they will eat hbh frog and tadpole bites along with small pieces of frozen krill, reptomin floating sticks and also small pieces of earthworms. If you are thinking about getting a african dwarf frog be really careful where you buy them as there is a fungus going thru the dwarf frogs that kills them pretty quickly. I had 5 of them and they all died within 1 month of having them. I have 11 adult african clawed frogs which get bigger and 3 froglets from raising some of the adults tadpoles. They are really cool pets. If you are the one talking about using a 20 gal. tank you could have 2 acfs in that tank along with a couple snails. You would need a filter for a 40 gal tank as they can be messing and you need to over filter. Anyway here is my site if you would like to join and read about them.

Target Stops Selling 'Planet Frog' at PETA's Urging

Live Animals Aren't Toys, Says Group

Minneapolis  -- After hearing from PETA about sales of a miniature aquarium called "Planet Frog," Minneapolis-based Target has agreed to stop selling the product. Biologists and wildlife specialists agree that small cubes such as Planet Frog--a miniature aquarium that houses two frogs in crowded conditions--are inhumane and inadequate, confining energetic animals to cramped plastic boxes in which they are slowly poisoned by their own waste. Keeping frogs as "pets" can also be hazardous to children's health, exposing them to diseases such as salmonellosis, sparganosis, and psittacosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since May 2009, at least 85 people from 31 states have become ill after exposure to water frogs.

"Target's decision to end its sales of Planet Frog sends the message that animals aren't disposable toys to be thrown out or stored in the closet when children get tired of them," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Frogs should be allowed to live free in their natural habitats, not be confined to a few square inches of dirty water."

Pet Frogs Blamed for Spreading Salmonella — Attorney At Law

The outbreak that spanned coast to coast – from California to Massachusetts – resulted in 85 cases of salmonella poisoning, mostly in children. Of the 85 sickened, 16 were hospitalized, but no deaths were reported, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The African dwarf frogs are less than two inches long and live in water. They are commonly sold as aquarium pets, the CDC said.

Most of those infected likely contracted salmonella by reaching into the aquarium water to retrieve their little pets or from eating food prepared kitchens where dirty aquarium water was dumped out, the CDC said. Salmonella more commonly causes food poisoning in people who eat contaminated food or drink tainted water.

Turtles Blamed for Earlier Outbreak

While officials said this is the first known outbreak of salmonella tied to frogs, this is not the first time unconventional pets have passed nasty bacteria onto people.

In October 2009, health officials confirmed pet turtles carrying salmonella had sickened 107 people in 34 states, with about one-third of those affected requiring hospitalization for the illness. Ironically, most of those infected in the latest outbreak did not know the frogs could carry dangerous salmonella and many parents had bought their children frogs to avoid buying turtles, which are more commonly associated with bacteria, officials said.

All the frogs involved in the current salmonella outbreak were produced by a single California breeder, according to the CDC. Some were given away as carnival prizes in Utah and Colorado while others were sold in pet stores in New Mexico or in a department store in Ohio, according to a WebMD article .

To prevent infections, the CDC advises pet owners to wash their hands thoroughly after touching animals or cleaning aquariums. Or, you could just get a dog.
